Harding University is a private liberal arts Christian university located in Searcy, which is the largest city and county seat of White County, situated in the US state of Arkansas, with a population estimated at a number of more than 20 000 inhabitants, during the 2006 census. Searcy is also the principal city of the Searcy, AR Micropolitan Statistical Area, which contains all of White County, and which, just like the city, takes its name from Richard Searcy, a judge for the Superior Court of the Arkansas Territory.
Harding University was founded in 1924, first starting as Harding College, and it was originally located in Morrilton, AR. The school was moved to its present location a decade later, its campus containing today 44 buildings, the university also having a graduate school of religion in Memphis, and satellite campuses in North Little Rock and Bentonville.
Harding's students are approximated at a number of more than 6000, including graduate students and all satellite campuses, who come from all 50 states and 49 foreign countries. The University offers educational programs at graduate, undergraduate, professional and doctoral levels, in areas of study such as: arts, business administration, education and science.
Athletics
Harding's athletic teams are known as the Bisons, who compete in NCAA Division-II, in GSC (Gulf South Conference), in various sports, for both men and women, including in baseball, basketball, football, golf, soccer, rugby, tennis and volleyball. Among the Bisons' most recent notable achievements there is the fact that the men's basketball team has reached the Division II Tournament twice, since moving to the NCAA, in 2003, for the first time in school history, and in 2008.
